Navigating a Career Change Outside of the School Setting with No Guidance: The Importance of Networking
Share
As educators, we are accustomed to guiding our students through transitions and changes in their academic lives. But what happens when we are the ones facing a career change outside of the school setting with no guidance? It can be a daunting and overwhelming experience, but it doesn't have to be. As someone who successfully transitioned from a school-based role to a fully remote role in EdTech after 6 months with no guidance, I am here to share my experience and offer some advice to those who are embarking on a similar journey.
The first thing I want to emphasize is the importance of networking. In my experience, connecting with others who have direct experience in the field you're interested in is essential to making the transition smoother. Whether it's through professional organizations, LinkedIn, or personal connections, reaching out to others can help you gain valuable insights and support.
One of the benefits of networking is the ability to connect with mentors who can guide and support you through the transition. A mentor can offer advice, share their experiences, and help you navigate any challenges that arise. I was fortunate enough to connect with a mentor who had gone through a similar transition, and their support was invaluable in helping me adjust to my new role.
Networking can also help you build connections and expand your professional network. This can be particularly helpful if you're looking for job opportunities or trying to build your personal brand. By connecting with others in the field, you may be able to find job openings or gain exposure to potential employers.
Lastly, I want to emphasize that you don't have to struggle through a career change on your own. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and isolated, but there are people who want to help and support you. Don't be afraid to reach out and connect with others who have gone through a similar experience. You may be surprised by the wealth of knowledge and support that's available to you.
